    Carver's Gap
Written by Gary Eblen, DBO Store Manager

Summer means long days so you can drive a "fur piece" take a right smart hike and still be home by dark. How about a trip to Carver's Gap--about 90 miles from my Hendersonville home. Why so far? The views. Hike north on the AT for a few miles over Round Bald and Jane Bald and if you want good views without going too far, veer off the AT and head up to Grassy Ridge. On a clear day you can see Mt Rogers, Grandfather Mt, Hawksbill, Table Rock and Mt Mitchell! For a more ambitious jaunt, instead of heading up Grassy Ridge, stay on the AT and walk to Little Hump (14-mile round trip) or on to Hump (17 mile round trip). Be forewarned, weekends mean you'll see lots of people. If you go during the week you might have these beautiful balds all to yourself. Lots of iron in these mountains so watch out for thunderstorms.

  • Directions:

From Asheville follow 19/23 North until they fork. Take 19 which becomes 19E to Spruce Pine. Hungry? Great food and the Cedar Crest! Closed on Sunday. From Spruce Pine take 226 to Bakersville. From Bakersville take 261 which climbs North to Carver's Gap. Parking is actually across the state line on the Tennessee side. There are picnic tables and rest rooms and well as the entrance to Roan Mt State Park. Back to food. If you find yourself starving on a Sunday, follow 19E out of Spruce Pine to Plumtree (15-20 miles) you'll see the Toe River Lodge on your left. Stop! The buffet is worth the drive.
