The History of Diamond Brand Canvas Products
Diamond Brand Canvas Products was established in Philadelphia in 1881. We have been involved in the sewn products industry since 1920 when we began to manufacture tarpaulins and other similar heavy canvas items. We manufactured the very first backpack for Boy Scouts of America in 1931. Today we still manufacture packs for Boy Scouts, as well as a myriad of other products, ranging from wall tents (along with their wooden, steel or aluminum poles and frames) to sashes for merit badges. Over the years, we have provided outdoor equipment to other quality-conscious accounts such as Girl Scouts of the USA, L.L. Bean, Eddie Bauer, Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), and Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS), among others. We manufacture many items for industrial accounts and the premium/incentive market as well.
During World War II, Diamond Brand manufactured products for 144 different government contracts in support of the U.S. war effort. Over the past fifteen years we have manufactured many products for the U.S. Military and have made government contracting a significant part of our area of expertise. We currently produce a five and seven man crew tent being fielded by the Army as well as the Air Force and Marine Corps as well as several foreign militaries. We are also intimately involved with the Special Forces and many highly specialized government agencies doing development work for new technology within our core manufacturing competencies. We are the exclusive manufacturer of the new standard issue military trauma bandage that will be fielded in every military medic kit throughout the Army and Marine Corps. We do this work in a clean room environment on site and expect this contract to run for many years to come. We currently work with several industrial accounts that are certified ISO 9001. Based upon this experience and working on government contracts, we are thoroughly comfortable with working to exacting specifications.
In 1977 we successfully introduced our own brand of outdoor equipment, which is distributed nationally through outdoor stores. We sell high end technical gear to the outdoor enthusiast as well as to many camps and extreme or adventure travel organizations nationally and worldwide. We currently employ approximately 125 people between the manufacturing and retail sides of the business.
